What is 17-4 PH Stainless Steel Casting

17-4PH stainless steel (SAE630 type stainless steel), is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel cast grade. Its chemical composition is what gave it its name. This is the most popular stainless steel casting alloy for all precipitation hardening stainlesssteel. 17-4 stainless steel castings are typically characterized by high corrosion resistance. 17-4 investment casting requires strength and toughness that the temperature range can control during heat treatment. Dawangcasting offers high-quality standards, including UNS S17400, AMS 5643, ASTM 5643, and ASTM 5643. AMS 5643, ASTM A564 and ASTM A693 Grade 630.

17-4 ph investment casting heat treatment

17-4 PH stainless steel castings can be further hardened by aging at temperatures between 480-620 degrees Celsius. This process combines the superior properties of the alloy with the reliability of the structure of the product. 17-4 ph investment casting heat treatment is simple and cost effective to manufacture. It is used extensively in stainless steel industries. There are many that can be used to determine the Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS), Yield Strength, Elongation and Hardness for the 17-4 ph investment cast.

High corrosion resistance

The corrosion resistance in 17-4 ph investment cast is comparable to that in Type 304 stainless steel. In most media, and better than the pardonable 400 series stainless steel.

Good welding properties

17-4 can forge or cast and has good machinability. Normal hardening requires only 482 – 624 °C (900 – 1150 °F) and air cooling, which virtually eliminates scaling and distortion.

Other properties of 17-4 ph investment casting are high strength, high hardness, excellent fatigue resistance, etc. So the 17-4PH stainless steel castings are more resistant to corrosion than any other standard pardonable casting and can be used in many media as an alternative to alloy 304. Corrosion resistance in certain chemical, petroleum, and paper industries (the equivalent to 304L).

17-4 ph stainless steel casting process as follows.

  1. Make the mold according to the 3d file
  2. Fill the mold with wax, get the wax mold
  3. Check and modify the pattern for any defects
  4. Weld the wax mold to form the assembly tree
  5. Build the shell by dipping the wax into the ceramic paste
  6. Heat the ceramic shell to remove the wax
  7. Pour the molten metal liquid into the shell
  8. Stripping shot blasting, or other surface preparation

Typical applications of 17-4 PH stainless steel castings

17-4 PH stainless steel castings does use in a wide variety of applications, including:
Various valve fittings or high strength parts that require a certain level of corrosion resistance
Aviation, military, and other mechanical parts and nuclear reactor components
Chemical fiber industry
Food industry
Oil and gas industry, etc.

17-4 PH Stainless Steel Castings Fabrication

Hot Forming

Perform a full solution anneal. Heat uniformly at 1742-2192°F (950-1200°C). After hot forming, full solution annealing, cooling below 76°F (25°C) and aging at the desired temperature must be performed.

Cold Forming

The cold-forming properties of alloy 17-4PH are limited. Cold forming can only perform on sheets in fully annealed conditions. After cold working, corrosion resistance is improved by re-aging at precipitation hardening temperatures.

Use mechanical cutting operations, such as band saws and abrasive waterjets. Avoid thermal cutting operations such as plasma cutting. Shearing and machining are preferred in cutting 17-4 investment casting.

Alloy 17-4PH is able to be welded using most standard processes including SMAW and GTAW as well as PAW and GMAW.

Available forms of 17-4 investment casting

Dawangcasting’s 17-4 PH stainless steel is available as forgings, billets, plates, bars, and wires. It is usually shipped in the Solution Annealed Condition (Condition A). This condition is suitable for custom fabrication and subsequent hardening. If requested by the customer, forging in hardened or overage states is also possible.

虽然汽车不锈钢通常air-melted, consumable electro slag and vacuum arc remelting are other options. The VAC CE process, in particular, reduces the gas content, disperses inclusions, minimizes alloy segregation, and reduces solidification.
Dawangcasting air-melted 17-4 PH stainless steel will meet the magnetic particle inspection requirements of Aerospace Material Specification AMS 2303.

Conditions of 17-4 investment casting

Precipitation Hardening

Double precipitation hardening softens the martensitic matrix to provide the best cutting rate and highest cutting efficiency to give the best cutting rate and highest impact strength.

Overage conditions.

a. Overage for forging, allowing cold sawing of large sections without cracking and without cracks
b. Copper-coated, cold drawn overage for cold heading
Overage conditions offer maximum softness for cold-headed. Materials in this state will not respond to aging treatments without being first treated with a solid solution.
